Big Ambitions Story Mode and Uncle Fred Objectives

Big Ambitions does have a story, and it is the thing that turns “an empty sandbox with a rent bill” into a game with direction for the first few hours.

Uncle Fred Runs the Objective Chain

Objectives are goals assigned to you by Uncle Fred, delivered as messages in his voice. They start before you own anything and walk you through the systems in order. The first three are a good illustration of how tightly scripted the opening is:

  1. “He has a cheap apartment you could probably afford.” Travel to and rent 3rd Street 45, then sleep until your energy is full — roughly 4.5 hours.
  2. “I transferred a couple of bucks because I want to make sure you get something to eat.” Buy a Standard Fridge from Square Appliances, place it in your apartment, buy fresh food at El Gato Foods, stock the fridge and eat.
  3. “You need to get out there and get a job.” Get a job at El Gato Foods and keep working until you have earned $300.

That third one is the answer to a question a lot of new players search for — “how to get a job at El Gato” is not an optional side activity, it is objective three of the main chain.

How Deep Does It Go?

Hovgaard has never published a total, but the Steam achievement list gives a hard floor. There are achievements for completing 30, 60 and 90 of Uncle Fred’s objectives — Your Best Friend at bronze, silver and gold. So the chain runs at least ninety objectives deep.

Objectives Versus Personal Goals

These are two different systems and the difference matters:

ObjectivesPersonal Goals
Given byUncle FredNobody — they exist independently
Happiness boost on completionNoYes, temporary
Steam achievementNoYes, directly mapped

Some objectives overlap with personal goals in content, but completing an objective does not itself pay out happiness or an achievement. If you are optimising, personal goals are the ones with mechanical payoff attached.

Personal Goals Map Onto Achievements

The mapping is direct and it makes the goal list a decent progression checklist:

Personal goalAchievement
Run 1 successful retail businessProduct Pusher — Bronze
Run 5 successful retail businessesProduct Pusher — Silver
Run 30 successful retail businessesProduct Pusher — Gold
Run 1 successful office businessSuit Castles — Bronze
Employ at least 10 / 50 / 100 peopleBoss Man — Bronze / Silver / Gold
Reach a bank balance of $100,000 / $2,000,000Big Stacks — Bronze / Silver

“Successful” here means positive net income for the specified businesses — not merely open. Full list in achievements.

Story Mode Is Not a Difficulty Setting

These are two separate options, and conflating them is a common source of confusion. Creators making tutorials for this game state both independently — one 0.10 tutorial opens with “we are playing on story mode and normal difficulty”, and another long-running series is titled around Hard Mode specifically.

So turning story mode off does not make the game harder, and playing on Hard does not remove the objective chain. If you want the guided opening without the punishment, story mode on plus Normal difficulty is the standard first-run combination.

Is There an Ending?

Story mode gives structure rather than a conclusion — it is a business sim, and the objective chain functions as an extended tutorial plus a progression spine rather than a narrative with a final cutscene. Players searching whether the game “has a story” are usually asking whether there is guided content at all, and the answer to that is clearly yes.

Practical Advice for the Opening

  • Follow the chain early. It walks you through the apartment, food, energy, jobs and first business systems in an order that works. Skipping it means discovering rent and hunger the hard way.
  • Buy more food than the objective asks for. Ten units of fresh food gets you through the first week without repeat trips.
  • Note the opening hours. Square Appliances does not open until 09:00, so sleeping until then in objective one is efficient rather than wasteful.
  • Do not rush past the job. The $300 target from El Gato is what funds the first real decision.
